Through his newly released photographic collection “Coffee Routes,“ Yiannis Taloumis is inviting readers on a journey exploring the path of coffee—from its origins all the way to your cup. Yiannis is a leading figure in the coffee world, boasting more than three decades of experience in the industry. As founder and managing director of Taf Coffee, he has spent the past few years focusing on the search for high-quality coffees, closely collaborating with farms worldwide and further highlighting the value of exceptional coffee in the Greek market.

Through his work, Yiannis has emphasized the importance of quality control and supported many baristas in both national and international competitions. Now, his new book of photos seamlessly blends personal narratives with breathtaking imagery, reflecting his experiences with coffee communities worldwide. Today, we’re hearing from Yiannis about the inspiration and process behind “Coffee Routes.“

A vibrant gathering in Athens celebrated the launch of “Coffee Routes,“ bringing together coffee enthusiasts, industry experts, and friends of Yiannis Taloumis for an unforgettable evening.

From Vision to Reality

When reflecting on the genesis of “Coffee Routes,“ Yiannis speaks with fondness. “Back in 2015, I wanted to do (something) in digital form; I had collected so many photos, and I really wanted to create something from it,” he says. Yiannis’ passion for coffee and photography converged, instilling a sense of urgency to share his experiences with a wider audience. Each origin trip, he reveals, yields an average of 900 photographs for him—and Yiannis shares that he had around 15,000 photographs when he first began the project.

Navigating this vast archive of images posed a significant challenge for Yiannis. “The main challenge was to sift through the photos and select the ones that were suitable for a print edition, because I took all these photos with my phone,” he says. Seeking help on the project, Yiannis decided to collaborate with a book curator and a copywriter, and it took the team about a year and half to complete the project.

Capturing Human Stories at Origin

One of the most poignant aspects of “Coffee Routes“ is the heartfelt connection Yiannis shares with the coffee producers featured throughout the collection. When asked if there is a particular chapter or moment in the book that evokes strong emotions for him, Yiannis responds, “All the ones that talk about what happens at origin. I travel there, but I only see these people a few days a year.” The relationships he has built during these fleeting visits infuse his photographs with emotional depth.

Yiannis intends to personally share his book with the producers and friends he has met along the way. “I plan to give the book to them directly,” he says, highlighting the importance of these connections.

What’s more, all proceeds from the sale of “Coffee Routes“ will be directed toward supporting a school in Ethiopia that Taf Coffee has been funding for many years. This initiative aims to provide essential clothing and food for the students, helping to create a better environment for learning and growth in the community.

Educating a Wider Audience

Yiannis makes it clear that “Coffee Routes“ is designed not only for those entrenched in the coffee world but also for those who may not be experts on coffee, but enjoy it in their daily lives. “My goal was to create a book that was not just personal to me but relevant to all those people who are not part of the coffee world in a professional capacity,” Yiannis says. Through the photographic collection, he aspires to guide readers on a journey that starts at the coffee farm and culminates in the final, delicious cup.

Yiannis adds, “I wanted to show (readers) in an aesthetic way, with easy-to-read texts, what it really takes for coffee to end up in their cup.” The feedback he has received from “uninitiated” coffee drinkers has been especially rewarding for him. “I enjoy hearing how much they have learned from it,” he notes, emphasizing that educating people about coffee can help enhance their appreciation of the drink.

The Next Chapter

As Yiannis concludes his reflections on “Coffee Routes,“ it’s clear that his creative journey is far from over. He shares his plans for a second book, indicating his desire to take a deeper dive into the intricate world of coffee varieties. “There’s so much to explore about the essence of coffee,” Yiannis says. “We want to talk more about varietals while also showcasing the culture around coffee in the places I visit, capturing the essence of coffee shops and the unique experiences they offer.”

This upcoming project signifies a continued commitment to understanding and portraying the diverse culture surrounding coffee. Yiannis’ travels to coffee shops and his photography will accompany this exploration, offering readers a multifaceted view of the coffee world.

Through personal narratives and stunning imagery, readers are taken on a journey that deepens their appreciation for the labor and stories behind each cup. Yiannis’ work is a poignant reminder of the power of storytelling and the beauty of cultural exchange, making “Coffee Routes“ an essential read for anyone who cherishes this beloved beverage.
