Bigface Coffee, the high-end specialty coffee brand created by NBA star Jimmy Butler, opened its first brick-and-mortar cafe in Miami this month.
Looking like a retro futuristic space station, the 2,500-square-foot shop that opened in Miami’s Design District was designed in collaboration with agency DE-YAN and takes inspiration from the Stanley Kubrick film “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
Displays of apparel, packaged coffee, brewing equipment and other merch fit into metallic enclaves in the shop’s walls. The condiment counter takes the form of a giant Bigface retail coffee package, complete with a bright orange label for Doublestar, the company’s flagship blend.
“It’s a futuristic yet inviting environment that’s as much about the experience as it is about the coffee,” Dejan Jovanovic, founder of DE-YAN, said in an announcement of the cafe opening.
Since Butler famously founded the coffee company inside the NBA bubble during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bigface has expanded through direct-to-consumer sales of a growing number of products, including branded coffee gear, clothing, bagged beans, Dripkit pourover packets and a line of oat milk lattes.
Butler also created a private cafe in his Southern California home, featuring a 3-group La Marzocco Leva espresso machine and other commercial equipment. Bigface’s coffees continue to be roasted by a supplier in Arkansas.
In Miami, they make their way into Modbar counter-mounted espresso groups paired with Mahlkönig grinders. Catering mostly to grab-and-go customers, the shop offers some seating in the form of black leather couches and risers.
Special menu items in the cafe include rotating tonics and a Bigface coffee flight for $100.
Bigface Chief Operating Officer Britt Berg told Daily Coffee News the shop will also sell coffees and merchandise not available elsewhere, while also hosting events. Berg also said more Bigface retail locations are planned for the future.
Bigface Coffee is located at 40 NE 40th Street in Miami. Comments? Questions? News to share? Contact DCN’s editors here.
